· What if your family can’t have a dog?

· What if your family can’t decide what kind of dog to get?

· How can you learn more?

Visit or Volunteer:

You should consider becoming a  volunteer at a rescue or shelter.

There, you can meet other dogs, and learn more about all of the different kinds of breeds that are available for adoption.

Volunteers Are Always Needed:

There are so many things that you and your family could do to help a rescue or shelter.

Dogs need to be played with, brushed, and there may be some chores you could do help.  A lot of times they need supplies, like old blankets, bowls, collars, or maybe just some new dog toys.   Ask a Parent to call some of your local rescues and shelters to see if you can volunteer.

Learn More About Different Dogs:

Most shelters and rescues are considered an all-breed rescue, which means they provide shelter for every kind of dog you can imagine.  Small dogs, bit dogs, short-haired dogs and long-haired dogs.  From Poodles to Shepherds, an all-breed rescue can also tell you more about each one of these breeds.

Fall In Love with a Mixed Breed

All-breed rescues also have mixed breeds, and an mixed-breed dog can make a wonderful pet, and they are one-of-a-kind!  Each one of the mixed-breed dogs in a shelter are unique!

Maybe you could have a Cat?

Some of these shelters and rescues have dogs and cats.  If you can’t own a dog, you may want to consider adopting a cat, especially if you live in an apartment, if your Parent works long hours, or if you travel a lot, a cat is a great option if you can’t have a dog.

Why is Volunteering so Important?

Volunteering is very important, because many times, rescues and shelters get litters of puppies and kittens, and the people that work there just don’t have the time to hold them, cuddle them, and play with them.  Volunteering at a shelter or rescue is a very rewarding and fun thing that your whole family might enjoy.

Do You Think You Want to Work with Animals When You Grow Up?

Do you think you might want to work in the animal field when you grow up, like a trainer, a veterinarian, or a breeder?  Then volunteering at a rescue or a shelter will give you a chance to learn a lot of new things.

Becoming a Foster Family:

You may also want to consider Fostering an animal.  Talk to your local shelter or rescue about what it takes to become a foster family.  Every time a family volunteers to be a foster family, another space becomes available at a shelter or rescue for animals who are on waiting lists to get in.
