Border Collies:
The two dogs mentioned in my book, Reckless and Hoover are actually my dogs, Reckless and Tinsel Town (shown right). I suppose this is where my story really starts. My love for these dogs motivated me to be a volunteer for Southeast Border Collie Rescue League in DeLand, Florida.
The more I volunteered, the more I learned, not only about Border Collies, but about a Dog’s Life in general.
After I rescued a little Corgi from puppy mill breeders, I decided to write my book, The Story of Penelope to help kids understand more about dogs.
· Should You Buy or Adopt a Border Collie? · Is the Border Collie Right For You? · Who Shouldn’t Own a Border Collie?
In order to own a Border Collie you should know a lot about the breed first, because their instincts as sheepherding dogs might affect your daily life! You must be able to command respect and train the dog, and your training must be consistent, which means, you must be a very good and experienced dog trainer.
Border Collies focus on motion, so if you have little brothers or sisters in your family, they will try to stop small children from walking and running. They may accidentally knock little children over or nip at their feet to make them stop moving. Border Collies have also been known to run right into a bicycle that is moving, in order to make it stop.
Unfortunately, Border Collies are famous for getting out of a fenced-in yard and chasing motorcycles in the street.
Border Collies have even been known to try to stop a grown up from running to answer a phone! In some cases, adopting or buying a Border Collie as a pet for your home may end up being a disaster!
If you really want a Border Collie, your family will have to agree to paying for and going to dog training classes. You will also have to make a forever promise to take your Border Collie to a dog park, practically every day. You may even want to start agility classes with your new Border Collie.
Before you plan on owning a Border Collie, you should visit a rescue or a shelter, and talk to the people that work there, and ask them if they think you can handle one!

Breed-Specific Rescues:
If you think you are close to making up your mind about what kind of dog you want, like a Golden Retriever, a Poodle or a Cocker Spaniel, for example, maybe you should check to see if there’s a rescue near your home that rescues those breeds. I live very close to a Border Collie Rescue, and I visit them often just to have fun and meet new dogs!
Every once and a while, I get to visit some puppies! Most of the time, there are no other dogs at that rescue, but Border Collies. |
